The 1979 New Yorker on the R body was shorter and much lighter than the previous generation but still had a big car look and ride, with a 318 cubic inch V8 standard and a 360 optional through 1980. A pillared hardtop with hidden headlamps and full width taillights, it offered a new Fifth Avenue trim package. Sales were robust, with almost 55,000 sold at a listed price of 8,631 dollars, in a range of ten exterior colors shared with the Newport.
