In 2010 the E84 X1 was in its first full year of sales in Europe, as a subcompact luxury crossover and the smallest of the BMW SUVs, sold in sDrive rear wheel drive and xDrive all wheel drive forms. It had been designed in response to rising petrol prices, since BMW had in 2006 identified the need for a smaller and more efficient SUV, and the new model attracted many first time BMW buyers. A diesel xDrive version was sold alongside the petrol sDrive and xDrive models.
