The X1 started in 2009 as BMW's smallest SUV, after the Concept X1 had been revealed at the Paris Motor Show in October 2008 and development had begun in 2006. It was a crossover based on the 3 Series with rear wheel drive as standard, aimed at a wider range of customers with a smaller size, better efficiency and a lower price than the larger X3, with all wheel drive xDrive as an option. The Paris showing of the Concept X1 in October 2008 had come only a year earlier.
