In 1979 the M1 was in its first full year of hand built production, an E26 coupe developed as a homologation special for sports car racing. Lamborghini, which had signed an agreement with BMW in the late 1970s to build a production racing car in sufficient quantity for homologation, no longer controlled the project, which BMW now ran through its Motorsport division. The car was sold from 1978 until 1981 as the BMW M1, and in 1979 it was available in the same single coupe body.
