From October 1994 BMW installed the new M73 V12 engine in the 850Ci, an engine that had just been launched in the E38 750i. A five speed automatic gearbox was fitted from mid 1994, and the Alpina B12 5.0 ended its production run in 1994. The 8 Series line of 1994 thus consisted of the 840Ci with its V8 and the 850Ci and 850CSi with V12 engines. The cars of 1994 therefore had a choice between V8 and V12 power, with the automatic gearbox improved.
