From mid 1995 production of the 840Ci phased in the newer 4.4 liter M62 V8 engine, which had better fuel economy and more torque, though the power output remained unchanged. The 850Ci with the M73 V12 and the 850CSi remained in the range. The 8 Series was now in its fifth year of production and its sales were far below those of its early years. The change of engine came as the E31 entered its sixth year of production.
