The E36 finished in 2000 with the 3 Series Compact, the last body style of the third generation, which was built from 1994 to 2000. The hatchback was an E36 shortened at the rear and used a rear semi trailing arm suspension like the E30 rather than the multilink design to save space. After it was gone, BMW moved the small hatch into the new 1 Series in 2004. The E46 Compact had been introduced in April 2000, so the E36 version lived only a few months into the year.
