The first 1 Series was the E8x family, a rear wheel drive range of hatchbacks, a coupe and a convertible that replaced the 3 Series Compact as BMW's entry level model. It was developed under design director Chris Bangle and previewed by the CS1 concept of 2002. The E87 five door arrived first in September 2004, the E81 three door in 2007, then the E82 coupe and E88 convertible, and the 1 Series was built in Regensburg and Leipzig. Its model years run from 2004 to 2013.
