The 2001 Acura MDX was introduced on October 5, 2000 and replaced the slow-selling SLX, a truck-based SUV sold only in the United States. The MDX instead was a car-like crossover, built in Ontario, with a 240 horsepower 3.5 litre V6 and the VTM-4 automatic all-wheel-drive system. It seated seven, though the third row held only two. Car and Driver picked it as the best luxury SUV of 2001 after a first comparison test against seven other SUVs.
