The Volvo XC90 is a mid-size luxury SUV that Volvo Cars has made since 2002 and now offers in its second generation, and it was Volvo's first SUV. The first generation was introduced at the 2002 North American International Auto Show, after the Adventure Concept Car shown in January 2001 and a teaser image in November 2001, and used the P2 platform shared with the first-generation S80 and other large Volvo cars. It was built at Volvo's Torslandaverken in Sweden until the end of 2014, when production equipment moved to China and the car was renamed the XC Classic. A Yamaha-built 4.4-litre V8 of 232 kilowatts was added in 2005, the year Volvo sold just over 40,000 XC90s in North America. In 2006 Volvo began a second generation on Ford's EUCD platform under the codename Y305, but cancelled it in 2008 as Ford and Volvo faced financial hardship. The all-new second generation arrived at the end of 2014 on the Scalable Product Architecture with only four-cylinder Drive-E engines, and both generations won Motor Trend's SUV of the Year award at their debuts.
