Volvo Cars, formally Volvo Car AB, is a Swedish multinational maker of luxury vehicles headquartered in Torslanda, Gothenburg, whose marketing centres on safety and its Swedish heritage and design. It was founded in 1927 in Gothenburg as a subsidiary of SKF, with Assar Gabrielsson as managing director and Gustav Larson as technical manager, and its first car, the Volvo ÖV 4, left the assembly line on 14 April 1927; the name is Latin for I roll, a trademark SKF first registered in 1915 for ball bearings. Volvo Cars has been separate from AB Volvo, the maker of heavy trucks, buses and construction equipment, since 1999, when AB Volvo sold its car division to the Ford Motor Company for 6.47 billion US dollars. On 28 March 2010 Ford sold Volvo Cars at a loss to Geely Holding for 1.8 billion dollars, a deal that closed in August 2010. Volvo Cars was listed on Nasdaq Stockholm in 2021, and Geely Holding still holds the majority. The atlas lists the models Volvo built while Ford owned the company, from 1999 to 2010.
