April 1974 brought the third generation Sprinter, based on the third generation E30 Corolla two door coupe and four door sedan. A three door shooting brake style liftback with the coupe's front end was added to the lineup in January 1976, and in 1976 all engines with dual carburettors were deleted from the line up in Japan because of tightening emission standards. In January 1977 a minor facelift came with a hardtop coupe variant, and the second facelift was in April 1978.
