Development of a full size SUV began in the mid 1990s with a design freeze in 1997, styled by Toshihiko Shirasawa. Speculation grew after the Tundra arrived that Toyota's Tundra based SUV would be called Highlander, but that name went to a Camry based crossover and the Sequoia was introduced at the Detroit show on 11 January 2000. It was nominated for North American Truck of the Year in 2001 and received a minor facelift in 2004 for the 2005 model year, with a VVT-i V8 and a 5 speed automatic.
