The XV40 was shown at the Detroit show in January 2006 and went on sale in North America in March 2006 as a 2007 model. For the first time a gasoline and electric hybrid version of the Camry was offered next to the four and six cylinder cars, and the Japanese market Camry was sold alongside a Daihatsu twin called the Altis. Production ran in Japan, Kentucky, Australia and, from late 2007, Russia, and from 2007 some American cars were built under contract at Subaru of Indiana. Asia and Australia got a distinct car with different panels, sold as the Aurion in Australia.
