The Shelby Series 1 is a roadster designed by Carroll Shelby and produced by Shelby American, unveiled at the 1997 Los Angeles Auto Show as a modern reinterpretation of the original Shelby AC Cobra. It was powered by Oldsmobile's 4.0 litre Aurora V8, tuned by Shelby to about 320 horsepower, with an X50 performance package and a supercharged option, and it used an aluminum chassis with carbon fiber and fiberglass body panels. Although a run of 500 was announced, only 249 were built, all as 1999 models, after certification costs and build problems such as poorly fitting soft tops; later cars were sold as engineless component cars in 2005. Much of the production was overseen by General Motors, which supplied many components. A Series II revival was planned in 2006, with three prototypes, and relaunched in 2024.
