The Shelby CSX, short for Carroll Shelby eXperimental, is a limited production high performance car based on the turbocharged and intercooled Dodge Shadow and Plymouth Sundance, offered by Shelby Automobiles Inc. from 1987 through 1989. The 1987 car used Shelby's intercooled Turbo II 2.2 litre four cylinder engine rated at 175 horsepower, with changed shocks and springs, rear discs and Shelby wheels, and 750 were sold. A CSX-T version of 1,001 white cars was made for the Thrifty rental company, repeating the Hertz Shelby Mustang idea of 1966. The final 1989 CSX-VNT, limited to 500 cars, introduced Garrett's variable nozzle turbo, the first use of variable turbine technology in a production car, and composite Fiberrides wheels, and it marked the end of Carroll Shelby's direct involvement with Dodge.
