Shanghai SH760

Automobiles

The Shanghai SH760 is a car produced in China from 1965 to 1991, primarily for government officials not important enough to warrant a FAW Hongqi and as a taxi. Its design was based on the 1954 Mercedes-Benz 220S (W180), with modified front and rear styling to resemble an American Packard of the same era. It grew out of the Phoenix prototypes built from 1958 by the Shanghai Automobile assembly line, and from December 1964 the modified Phoenix was in full production as the SH760, powered by the Jinfeng 680Q, a 2.2 litre straight-six engine with a four-speed manual gearbox. The maker began as the Shanghai City Agricultural Machinery Manufacturing Company, became STAC in 1969 and SATIC in the mid-1980s, and became SAIC in 1990. Variants include the 1974 SH760A, the SH760B with a 2.3 litre engine, pick-up derivatives and the SH7221 and SH7231 redesignations of 1989. Production ended on 25 November 1991 after 79,526 cars of all SH760s and derivatives.
