SAIC Motor

Vehicle and Equipment Manufacturers

SAIC Motor Corp., Ltd., formerly the Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation, is a Chinese state-owned automobile manufacturer headquartered in Anting, Shanghai. Founded in 1955, it is the largest of the Big Four state-owned Chinese carmakers, ahead of FAW Group, Dongfeng Motor Corporation and Changan Automobile, with sales above 4.5 million vehicles in 2025. Its modern growth followed a 1984 agreement with Volkswagen, which led to the SAIC-Volkswagen joint venture, and a 1997 agreement with General Motors, which began operating as Shanghai General Motors in 1998. SAIC also sells vehicles under its own brands, among them IM Motors, Roewe, MG, Rising Auto and Maxus, which is also sold as LDV, and it is the largest shareholder of SAIC-GM-Wuling, which sells the Wuling and Baojun brands. In 2005 SAIC lost the bid for the failed British maker MG Rover to Nanjing Automobile, then absorbed Nanjing Automobile in 2007 and so came to own the MG name.
