The Saab Sport was a special model of the Saab 96, launched in 1962 as the replacement for the Saab GT750. It was the first time Saab's grand touring version was sold in Sweden, because the GT750 had never been sold there through the official channel. It had the same body as the 96 but a different interior and equipment, and outside it was recognised by double chrome stripes along the lower body, extra lights and different hub caps. The engine was an 841 cc three cylinder two-stroke with one Solex carburettor per cylinder giving 52 hp, lubricated from a separate oil tank so that oil no longer had to be mixed into the petrol by hand, and the car had four gears and front disc brakes, unusual at the time. In the United States it was called the GT850 and, after Saab's Monte Carlo Rally success, it became the Monte Carlo 850 from 1964. The model changed alongside the ordinary 96 and left the market in spring 1968, ending as the four-stroke Monte Carlo V4.
