The second generation of the Renault Samsung SM5, coded EX1 or DF, replaced the first generation in 2005 and was sold until about 2010. It shared its design with the larger SM7 and, like it, was based on the Nissan Teana and Maxima. From 2008 to 2010 it was also sold in the Gulf States and Mexico as the Renault Safrane, with the project code A34R, while Renault Samsung used DF for the SM5 Impression. It was built at the Busan plant in South Korea and was a mid-size car, a D-segment large family car in European terms, sold alongside the third generation that appeared in early 2010.
