The first generation GTO is credited with popularizing the muscle car market segment in the 1960s. It began production on September 3, 1963 as an option package for the Tempest based LeMans, available as a coupe, hardtop and convertible, with a 389 cubic inch V8, and it became a separate Pontiac model, number 242, in 1966. Its model years run from 1964 to 1967. The GTO is credited with starting a trend that saw all four domestic automakers offer competing models.
