The first generation Firebird was introduced on February 23, 1967, five months after the platform sharing Chevrolet Camaro, as a pony car to compete with the Ford Mustang. Its rear slit taillights were inspired by the 1966 and 1967 Pontiac GTO and Grand Prix, and both a two door hardtop and a convertible were offered through the 1969 model year. The Trans Am performance package arrived in March 1969. Its model years run from 1967 to 1969.
