The Bonneville was significantly downsized for 1977, with the Bonneville and Catalina 14 inches shorter, over four inches narrower and 800 pounds lighter than in 1976 while offering increased headroom, rear seat legroom and trunk space. Only a pillared four door sedan and two door coupe were offered, with a Safari station wagon regained as part of the line for the first time since 1970. General Motors discontinued the sixth generation with the 1981 model year. Its model years run from 1977 to 1981.
