The first Barracuda was a fastback version of the compact Valiant, with the same wheelbase, hood, doors and bumpers and a huge wraparound rear window that was its distinguishing feature. Plymouth wanted a share of the sporty compact market that Ford was about to open with the Mustang, and sharing the Valiant's parts kept development cost and time low. Early cars were sold with the Valiant's slant six engines and a new small V8, and the model slowly gained performance options and an identity of its own. Its model years run from 1964 to 1966.
