The Oldsmobile 442 is a performance package and later a distinct model that Oldsmobile introduced in 1964, its name originally derived from its four barrel carburetor, four speed manual transmission and dual exhaust configuration. Applied to the division's mid-size Cutlass based cars through the muscle car era, it became Oldsmobile's principal performance nameplate, competing against similarly positioned muscle cars from Chevrolet, Pontiac and other General Motors divisions.
