The first generation of the car, known at first as the Colt Galant, was released in December 1969 at a new Mitsubishi dealership called Galant Shop, with a Dynawedge design. It was available at first as a four door sedan, and a five door estate and the two door hardtop A53 followed in 1970, the first Mitsubishi with full side windows and no side pillars, with the new Saturn engine of 1.3 or 1.5 liters. It became Mitsubishi's first car sold in the United States in 1971 as the Dodge Colt. Its model years run from 1969 to 1972.
