From 1970 a fastback coupe model was developed, the Galant GTO, styled after contemporary American muscle cars, a hardtop with a choice of two Saturn engines. The five door estate and the two door hardtop A53 variants were added in 1970 to the original four door sedan, and the hardtop was Mitsubishi's first production passenger car with full side windows and no side pillars. The Galant competed with the Toyota Corona, Nissan Bluebird, Honda Accord and Mazda Capella.
