The fifth-generation Mitsubishi Fuso Canter appeared in October 1985 with a more square and smoother appearance than the previous model, and larger single rectangular headlights replaced the earlier twin round units, although some export markets such as the United States kept twin round headlights. Front disc brakes were adopted on some models. In July 1986 a 4WD option was added to the Canter 20 and Canter 30, the lightweight Canter 15 was renamed Canter Guts in January 1987 for the Japanese market, and the Fighter Mignon was marketed outside Japan as the Canter 75, Canter HD or FH. A facelift followed in November 1989 and ABS brakes became available in June 1991. In North America it was sold as the Mitsubishi Fuso FE, FG and FH.
