The MG R-type was a single-seat racing car built in 1935 and developed from the Q-type, with a supercharged overhead-camshaft engine giving 110 bhp at 7200 rpm and a four-speed preselector gearbox. Its chief novelty was a Y-shaped steel backbone chassis with independent suspension all round by wishbones and longitudinal torsion bars, a first for MG and possibly the British motor industry. The aluminium body resembled a miniature Grand Prix racer and was designed to be easily removable. It was offered at 750 pounds, the first ten went to pre-selected customers, and a further batch was planned but never happened.
