The MG Montego was the performance version of the Austin Montego saloon, sold from the family car range launched in 1984 to compete with the Ford Sierra and Vauxhall Cavalier. Like the MG Maestro it carried a solid-state instrument cluster, a trip computer and a synthesised voice for its warning and information systems. A turbocharged MG version released in early 1985 produced 150 bhp and was described as the fastest production MG ever, with a top speed of 126 mph and a 0 to 60 mph time of 7.3 seconds. About 23,000 MG Montegos were built, against 546,000 Austin and Rover badged Montegos, and the Montego saloon itself stayed in production until 1993.
