The MG Metro 6R4 was a four-wheel-drive, mid-engined rally car built for the short-lived Group B category, its name standing for six cylinders, rally, four-wheel drive. Despite its Metro bodywork it shared almost nothing with the production hatchback, using a tubular semi-monocoque chassis and a naturally aspirated 3 litre V6 designed by David Wood, which borrowed ideas from the Cosworth DFV. Williams Grand Prix Engineering was entrusted with its development, and it was shown to the public in May 1985. About 200 road-going Clubman cars of roughly 250 bhp were made for homologation, while the rally cars produced over 410 bhp. Tony Pond finished third on the 1985 Lombard RAC Rally, but Group B was banned halfway through 1986 and Austin Rover withdrew from rallying at the end of that season.
