The second generation went on sale on 7 February 2005 in Japan and mid 2005 in export markets, and was bigger than the first generation in all aspects. It was now sold as the Mazda5 in all markets except Japan. It is based on Ford's global C1 platform, meaning it shares many parts with the Mazda3. The Mazda5 replaced the Mazda MPV as Mazda's minivan offering in most export markets. Its model years run from 2005 to 2009.
