An updated Autozam Carol came out in October 1995 as a 1996 model, front or all wheel drive and still on the platform of the Suzuki Alto, with its own bodywork as a three door hatchback with a vestigial notchback design. A turbocharged SOHC version was offered, and Mazda developed the retro styled Carol Custom and Carol Classic. The car was sold in Japan as a kei car, built to the size and engine limits of that class. Its model years run from 1995 to 1997.
