Leyland Sherpa

Trucks and Commercial Road Vehicles

The Leyland Sherpa was a light commercial van launched by British Leyland in 1974 under the nameplate Leyland Van, developed by the Austin-Morris division and derived from the Morris and BMC J4 and JU250 vans of the 1960s. By moving the engine ahead of the cab, under a bonnet, it brought Leyland's van into line with the Ford Transit and Bedford CF and allowed a longer wheelbase, greater payload and side loading. It was designed to be built on car production lines, which gave it a narrow track that suited city streets and made it a favourite of Royal Mail and British Telecom. The first range offered vans, pick-ups, crew buses and chassis cabs, and in 1978 the 1.7 and 2.0 litre O series engines replaced the B series petrol units. The Sherpa was sold under a succession of marque names, Leyland, Morris, Austin-Morris and finally Freight Rover, and its line continued as the Freight Rover 200 series, the Leyland DAF 200 series and eventually the LDV Pilot.
