Leyland RAF Type

Trucks and Commercial Road Vehicles

The Leyland RAF Type lorry, also called the Leyland Subsidy A Type, was a British lorry built by Leyland Motors in the 1910s that saw wide service with the militaries of the British Empire in the First World War. It was linked above all with the Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Air Force, and after the war large numbers were reconditioned by Leyland and sold to the public as the RAF Type. A cab-behind-engine, rear-wheel-drive lorry developed from the 4-ton Leyland S Class, it carried 3 long tons in military service and 4 in civilian use, and early cars had a 30 hp four-cylinder side-valve petrol engine, with a larger 316 cubic inch unit of 36 hp from 1914.
