Leyland armoured car

Automobiles

The Leyland armoured car was a group of four armoured cars built in Ireland between 1934 and 1940 for the Irish Army, which served with the Army until 1972 and with the reserve force, An Forsa Cosanta Aitiuil, until the early 1980s. Each was based on a 6x4 Leyland Terrier lorry chassis. The first chassis was bought from Ashenhurst of Dublin in 1934 and given an armoured hull and turrets from an obsolete Peerless armoured car, and three more chassis followed in 1935 with a Landsverk L60 tank turret chosen. They served with the 1st Armoured Squadron alongside the Landsverk L180 and Irish-built Dodge cars, and in 1958 the front hull was modified and Ford V-8 engines fitted.
