The first generation Lexus RX, XU10, grew out of an idea of 1993 for a crossover between a luxury sedan and an SUV, which executives of Toyota Motor Sales and Toyota Motor hypothesised over a luncheon in Nagoya. It was formally proposed at a product planning meeting in Toyota City in 1994 and put into development. Designer Makoto Oshima's final design was approved in December 1995 and prototypes were tested in 1996. In Japan Toyota was already selling the Caldina, which offered all-wheel drive and a spacious interior. The SLV concept previewed the RX at the Chicago Auto Show on 9 February 1997, and export sales began in March 1998 as the Lexus RX.
