The third generation Lexus GS, S190, followed development that began in 1999 under chief engineer Shigetoshi Miyoshi. Styling of the exterior and interior was done under lead designer Yasuhide Hosoda between 2000 and 2002, and the L-finesse design philosophy came to fruition in 2001. A design was finalised by 2002. In October 2003 Lexus debuted the LF-S, the Lexus Future Sedan concept car, which previewed the design of the coming GS, and Toyota filed the design patent on 22 December 2003. The car first appeared as a pre-production vehicle at the 2004 North American International Auto Show on 5 January. It premiered globally for the 2006 model year and was produced in V6, V8 and hybrid versions, the hybrid being the GS 450h.
