The Ka-31, with the NATO reporting name Helix, is a naval helicopter built for airborne early warning and control, carrying a large rotating radar antenna that folds and stows under the fuselage so the landing gear and radar do not interfere. Like most Kamov helicopters it has coaxial contra-rotating main rotors, and its airframe is derived from the Ka-27 and Ka-29. The Soviet Navy asked the Kamov design bureau for an early-warning helicopter in 1985, because the carrier-based Yak-44 under development could not be deployed on every ship type. The first flight took place in 1987 and the Russian Navy accepted it into service in 1995. India ordered four in 1999 and five more in 2001, later adding further helicopters, and China also operates the type. The helicopter relays radar data to nearby ships for processing rather than analysing it aboard.
