The first generation Liberty, the KJ, was introduced in May 2001 as a replacement for the Cherokee XJ, and was priced between the Wrangler and Grand Cherokee. Inspired by styling from the Dakar and Jeepster concept vehicles, it was designed by Bob Boniface in 1998, and it was the first Jeep vehicle to use rack and pinion steering and the two then new PowerTech engines, a 2.4 liter four and a 3.7 liter V6. It was assembled at Toledo North Assembly. Its model years run from 2002 to 2007.
