The Jaguar XJ40 is the second generation of the Jaguar XJ, a full-size luxury saloon manufactured by Jaguar Cars between 1986 and 1994 and officially unveiled on 8 October 1986 to replace the Series III. The two model ranges were sold concurrently until the Series III was discontinued in 1992. It used the Jaguar independent rear suspension arrangement and featured technological enhancements such as an electronic instrument cluster, and it was the last car developed independently by Jaguar before its takeover by Ford, and the last developed largely within the lifetime of the company's founder Sir William Lyons. Two engines were offered across the XJ40 models, a 2.9 litre and a 3.6 litre version of the Jaguar AJ6 inline-six, the 3.6 being replaced by a 4.0 in 1990, and the V12-powered XJ12 followed in 1993. The 1993 XJ6 earned the title of Safest Car in Britain in a government survey, and the original car gave way to the heavily revised X300 in 1994.
