The Jaguar X308 is the generation of the Jaguar XJ, a full-size luxury saloon car made by Jaguar Cars from 1997 until 2002. It has a Jaguar AJ-V8 engine and Jaguar independent rear suspension, and it was the third and final evolution of the Jaguar XJ40 platform that had been in production since 1986, preceded by the X300. It kept much of its predecessor's rounded four-headlamp styling, differing in the oval indicator lenses, and its dashboard replaced the rectangular instrument binnacle with three deeply recessed dials similar to the Jaguar XK8. After Ford halted development of a new saloon termed XJ90, the X308 went on to become Jaguar's first V8-powered saloon car, the V8 replacing the discontinued AJ16 inline-six and V12 engines. In 2001 Jaguar produced five hundred examples of a special edition named the XJR 100 to mark the 100th anniversary of Sir William Lyons' birth.
