The first generation Commodore, the VB, VC, VH, VK and VL series, was introduced in October 1978 and was based on the Opel designed V body rear wheel drive platform, structurally strengthened and mechanically modified by Holden for Australian conditions. Holden also adopted the name Commodore from Opel, which had been using it since 1967. Its model years run from 1978 to 1988. It was built at Elizabeth in South Australia and, from 1979 to 1990, in New Zealand.
