The sixth generation Explorer debuted on 9 January 2019 on a rear wheel drive based platform shared with the new Lincoln Aviator, with a turbocharged 2.3 liter four of 300 horsepower as the standard engine and an optional twin turbo 3.0 liter V6, in XLT, Limited, ST and Platinum trims. A hybrid was added, along with a plug in hybrid for Europe. The car became the best selling SUV in the United States in 2020 and was facelifted for the 2025 model year.
