De Havilland Canada DHC-5D Buffalo

Military Aircraft

The DHC-5D is the improved version of the de Havilland Canada DHC-5 Buffalo, the STOL utility transport developed from the DHC-4 Caribou. It is powered by two 2,336 kW (3,133 shp) General Electric CT64-820-4 turboprop engines. Production of the Buffalo had ended with the DHC-5A in 1972 and restarted with the DHC-5D in 1974; the variant sold to several overseas air forces, beginning with Egypt, and production of the DHC-5D ended in December 1986. A production DHC-5D was used to set time-to-height records in the 12,000 to 16,000 kilogram weight category on 16 February 1976, reaching 3,000 metres in 2 minutes 12.75 seconds, 6,000 metres in 4 minutes 27.5 seconds and 9,000 metres in 8 minutes 3.5 seconds.
