The first generation Silverado, the GMT800, was released in August 1998 as a 1999 model for the light duty 1500 and 2500 pickups, shared with the second generation GMC Sierra. It took its name from the top trim level of the Chevrolet C/K series. The classic GMT400 trucks continued alongside it, the heavy duty trucks followed a year later, and the trucks were refreshed for the 2003 model year. Its model years run from 1999 to 2006.
