The production Riviera was introduced on October 4, 1962 as a 1963 model, a ground up design on a new General Motors E platform and General Motors' first entry into the personal luxury car segment. Total production was deliberately limited to 40,000 vehicles in 1963, in a year when Buick sold 440,000 units overall, to emphasize its exclusivity. Its model years run from 1963 to 1965. The Gran Sport version arrived in 1965 with the Super Wildcat V8.
