The Gipsy was designed as a lower cost replacement for the military Champ so that Austin could compete with the Land Rover, and both it and the Champ differed greatly from the American Jeep, the Gipsy being closer to the Land Rover in design, appearance and price. Its steel body and its independent suspension all round on Flexitor rubber springs by Alex Moulton let it cross rough ground at speed. Its model years run from 1958 to 1968.
