The Mazda Atenza name used in Japan since 2002 was dropped in 2019, and from then on the Japanese car also carried the Mazda6 name used in other markets. It stayed a four door sedan and a five door wagon, and remained the mid size car that had replaced the Capella and 626 in 2002. It was still made by Mazda in Japan, where production for North America and Europe had been concentrated since 2012, in the seventh year of the generation.
