In 2017 the Mazda6 was in its fifth model year as a third generation car, sold as a sedan or a wagon and made at Hofu in Japan. Mazda marketed the nameplate in Japan as the Atenza, derived from the Italian word attenzione, until 2019, while the rest of the world used the Mazda6 name. The generation had been unveiled in Moscow and Paris in 2012 and previewed by two concept cars, the Shinari and the Takeri.
